HFHC In Focus
Rocks In the Water... | Print |  E-mail
Boy in HincheArticle by Rob Rice, a new HFHC Advisory Board member.
Rob assisted a HFHC team on a follow-up crisis relief visit to haiti the first part of this month.  We are certainly happy to welcome Rob as a member of our Advisory Board team.

During our first morning in Port-au-Prince, Ken Bever, HFHC founder, shared with us a well-known Haitian proverb:  Roch nan dlo pa konnen mize roch nan soley.  Translated this means:  Rocks in the water cannot comprehend the pain of rocks in the sun.  I am sure that if I had not seen the sights of the evening before, I would not have understood these words without giving them a lot of thought.  But the drive through the absolute poverty and devastation, followed by the visit to the HFHC orphanage at Cazeau, changed me forever.  I had seen poverty and destruction, but never on this scale.  We passed a tent city just outside the airport (which itself was quite damaged), and my heart started to hurt.  I saw children washing in filthy water, women doing dishes in that same filthy water, pigs eating garbage on the side of the road and more trash than I thought was possible.

Education Sponsorship - Teens from Mountain Villages Receive Transportation Help

200910longwalk

Life is difficult for everyone in Haiti. Even if you have all of your basic needs met, and more, life is still difficult! The youth in our education program who live in the mountain villages of Brajirois and Robert have an added difficulty. In the villages where they live with their families, there are no secondary schools for them to attend.

They have three options for school:
1. Walk the 3 hours down the mountain each morning and 3 hours back up in
the afternoon.
2. Move to the village at the foot of the mountain and live with relatives or friends.
The walk to school is still from 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours each way.
3. Drop out of school.

Education Sponsorship - Director of the Cite Soleil Christian School comes to visit

Elders pray for Jean Baptiste

One of Haiti’s finest came to Houston for a visit. Who was it? Our very own Jean Baptiste Chery, preacher for the Cite Soleil Church and Director of the Christian School. Jean Baptiste is a gentle man, good natured, and has a warm smile. He is devoted to God, his family, and to his church and school. We could tell he was missing his wife and two young sons. It's rare for the ministers who partner with HFHC to travel to the U.S. So, we made the most of it!

The Cite Soleil School is sponsored by the Southeast Church of Christ in the Houston area. This relationship began two years ago and has grown into a wonderful partnership. About one hundred children are sponsored by members of Southeast and several have gone on mission trips and met their sponsored child.

Education Sponsorship - Teens go to Summer Camp

Boy at Camp

Most of Haiti’s stories focus on the plight of the Haitian people, their gut-wrenching poverty and overall hopelessness. This article won’t. This is a story about happier things.

Many of us have fond memories of attending camp each year; it was always a high point of our summer. HFHC has discovered that Haitian young people feel the same way. Last month some 160 sponsored teenagers were bussed to the Global Outreach Center, about 30 minutes outside of Port-au-Prince, to attend the 3-day Youth Conference.

When asked, our sponsored young people will enthusiastically say that the Youth Conference is the highlight of their year. It's a place where they can relax and be at ease for a few days-an environment very different from where most of them live. The facility has large fields of green grass for playing soccer, instead of playing on dirt and rocks. Here they get three hot meals a day with large portions of delicious food.
